REVIEW: Last Rizla - Last Rizla

Last Rizla - Nine One One

Whether you know it or not Greece has a great underground music scene, I've heard quite a few good bands come from the land of blue skies and sparkling seas. This new band Last Rizla is no exception to the rule. Following the current trend of artists and releasing their work themselves, they seem to be generating quite a buzz.

The self-titled album is full of plenty of fuzzy wah-drenched guitars, chilled-out psyche passages, and thought provoking, mostly spoken word lyrics, ala Henry Rollins and Lou Reed. But that's not all. At times they let loose a groovy funk riff, and then dive into a jazzy midsection. Then bring it all back around with some reggae. The disc is quite diverse and doesn't follow any particular pattern. To me this is quite refreshing. With so many bands sounding the same, this is really a breath of fresh air. The first time I heard it I wasn't sure what to make of it. But with repeat listens I learned to "get it". It's a grower for sure.

The production value is great, rivaling anything you might hear from some big label. Best enjoyed with headphones.... and your buddy Herb.

Last Rizla have chosen to give away this release to anyone interested as a free download via their myspace or grab it from the Planetfuzz Demoland link ,surf on over and judge for yourself. You might just be glad you did!
