REVIEW: Wight - Wight Weedy Wight

PsychedelicDoom from Germany
Wight - Let Me Know When You Found God

When you see a full-length release with only six songs on it, you know it's either gonna be an epic meditation on astral physics, a long, dreadfully boring slog—or simply shameless Sleep/YOB worship.  In that regard, Wight Weedy Wight really leans toward the latter.  While not as good as the originals, if your lazy, half-baked ass can't make it to Holy Mountain, Wight is a whole lot better than drinking New Coke.

In opening track “Cosmic Rhythm #1,” Wight wears both its influences on its sleeve in a five-minute, drugged out, space-jam instrumental.  Then they get into the really long stuff.  “All Beyond the Piend(!?) of Being” begins as a cosmic blues, before a signature Al Cisneros bass groove joins the fray amidst some trippy riffing. A few spaced-out solos—guitar and bass—complete with spaceship sounds later, and we have a nine-minute meditation on...what?  I'm not quite sure.

“Let Me Know When You Found God” (Oh, the grammar!) is equally long and slow, but unfortunately, it's also more structured and less interesting, although there are some redeeming moments to be found within its 10-minute, 10 km/h journey.  For one, it contains a true guitar solo without any backing instruments.  You don't hear those every day...

Perhaps the piece de resistance is the 12-minute title track.  Driven by a rock-solid bass groove and fueled by lotsa wah, tis a solid spacey instro tune—for a good eight and a half minutes, anyways.  The vocals don't really add much to the proceedings, but without checking, I'm assuming their singer also plays the bass.

Singer kicks it into Steven Tyler mode on “Shaman Woman,” a rather pedestrian blues rocker that's hindered by the piercing vocals. Fortunately, it's over in less than four minutes.  “Hammer Boogie” barely eclipses the four-minute mark, and has a bit more balls, not to mention a freakin' saxophone solo!  Still, it seems strange that they wouldn't end with an epic number.  Guess they were running outta time at the recording studio, or something.

REVIEW: DESART - Stoned Frenzy Ep

StonerRocK from Germany
DESART - Gasoline

A little bit of Myspace digging reveals that these guys hail from Germany. Now correct me if I'm wrong but from what I remember of my geography lessons at school Germany is a little short of deserts. That fact is lost on these three guys as they plunder the history of stoner/desert rock on this self released five track EP.

The problem is that there are so many bands out there right now from the Mojave to Minsk who owe a huge debt to bands like Fu Manchu, Unida, Kyuss...etc and there is little here to distinguish Desart from the rest of the pack. It's far from terrible...the riffs rock, the vocals have that dirty, weed burned edge, the guitar is nice an fuzzy and the drums know when to hold back and groove and when to hit the throttle and kick up some dust but there is little here that makes me want to put my copy of The Action Is Go back on the shelf and pick this up instead.

If I were to walk into a bar and these guys were playing I'd certainly grab a beer, nod my head and dig the grooves, especially with tracks like "Nebular Sunrise" which comes very close to Orange Goblin territory. At the end of the night, however, I think I'd go home and pull out my copy of The Big Black and give that a spin instead.

Judging by the band's website and Myspace page this looks like the first release from these guys and is of sufficient quality to merit a listen but I think Desart are still finding their feet and their sound. A couple more years, a few more gigs, several more beers, a shot of whiskey for good measure and these guys could be on to something.

Smokin Engine -  Apollo 13

Hailing from Dresden, Germany these 4 fuzz cats produce a style of rock that could fall into many genres! Think Grunge meets psychedelic raw garage. Fans of Fu Manchu, Electric Wizard and Orange Goblin should get a kick out of these guys.
Although still young and fresh to the fuzz scene these guys though gigs and playing with many more bands will without doubt be someone to look out for in the future.

Highly recommended!

REVIEW: Buddha Sentenza - MODE 0909

PsychedelicRock from Germany
Buddha Sentenza - Noise From The Death Factory

Buddha Sentenza hailing from Germany is the perfect match of psyche, stoner and hard driven acid rock. These aces are for sure one of the best instrumental acts around, every minute of it is a treat for both body and soul!

The eight track debut album 'Mode 0909' by the young band Buddha Sentenza opens with the psychedelic 'Black Coal Funeral' 5,47 minutes long warm-up of what to come. Finely carved up atmospheric psyche riffs mixed with a good dose of blues. The second nugget 'White Crystal Party' is an acid flavoured fuzz attack just under two minute limit, I tell ya... when this kicks off the drug party is on!

The unstoppable meanmachine crushes on with yet another punch in the belly, the forceful 'Ride With The Devil' and more trippy 'Saturn' makes the whole building shiver and my speaker's whimpers in joy. I like it alot, BUT if they have put some vocals on some of it, it would have been even more interesting. I believe my neighbours are getting real angry at this point, but who cares as long as Buddha's on the world holds its breath (at least my neighbourhood).

The adrenaline pumped 'Noise From The Death Factory' and the quite obscure 'Sexual Omega' has to be my favourites on 'Mode 0909' and is definitely one of the highlights on the album. The latter is a whirlwind of noise rock and psychedelic magic, a symphony of madness with a touch of both jazz and blues. 'Sexual Omega' runs over you like a tank, a slap in the face with an intensity that makes your ears crumble... full speed at high level!

This is like rewinding time back to the years 1968-72 which makes me think of bands like Blue cheer, MC5, Virus, Juan de la cruz and not to forget the psychedelic scene at that time. You get all this (without vocals) along with a big fat stoner vibe of today. Buddha Sentenza clearly shows who's in charge, talented musicians who constantly churn out masterful riffs without holding back anything. Furious fuzz guitars with first class drumming and cool bass-lines, even some wild piano/keyboard parts are included in the arsenal. All together in (almost) 300 jerk... simply, these guys are creatures from outer space!

REVIEW: Bone Man - Bone Man

StonerRocK from Germany
Bone Man - Lecher In The Hollow

I often find it incredible, disappointing and frustrating how record labels seem happy to throw a small fortune at releasing mindless, generic shit when there are bands like Bone Man out there doing it for themselves. It's bands like this that make the whole job of reviewing completely worthwhile when you get that vibe of checking out something new and being blown away!!!!

Hailing from Kiel in Germany, this three piece have gone the whole hog and put together an eight song album for their debut release that would put most label releases to shame...and then some. Bristling with a massive, gut punching production and lurching from doom to stoner to grunge to psychedelia with all stops in between this is a remarkable release.

Opening track "The Wizard" is a prime piece of tripped out doom throwing in some nice spacey effects around the huge burning riff. Marian's vocals bounce between a full blown guttural roar to Jim Morrison-esque croon with ease. Unfortunately this is also the least remarkable track on the album and doesn't fully prepare the listener for the delights to follow. "Lecher In The Hollow" is next and is undeniably the catchiest slice of stoner glam I've heard in years. If you don't find yourself singing along to the genius refrain of "I'm a dirty old man, I'll do what I can" then, frankly, you're a twat!!!! This track is pretty much the equal of any stoner tune I've heard in the last ten years and should see these guys get signed on the strength of this tune alone!!!

Track three offers yet another change of pace. "I Have Never Been In The Desert", ironically considering the title, is a kick ass hard rocker that Kyuss would have given their left nuts to have written. "Into The Green" pops a tab, sets phasers to stun and heads into serious head territory with a psychedelic journey that's equal parts Jane's addiction and Kyuss again. "Carnosaurus" pumps the gas for a brutal heads down punked up noise blast that teeters on the brink of collapse but holds things together...just. Obligatory quiet track "Out of the Green" is a non essential acoustic piece that's pleasant enough and does at least give some respite to mop up your bloody nose after the previous track.

One they stop messing about and break out the amps again, "Heliopolis" is another trip into the psychedelic subconcience...big of riff and swirly of effects with a touch of Soundgarden and Monster Magnet running through it's lysergically altered veins. "Lady Vanity" rounds things off nicely with a tasty rock number that flexes its 70's chops and shows that these guys aren't content to follow a singular path.

One tip, don't go by what you hear on Myspace...buy this CD and whack it into a stereo with some guts...let the bass kick you in the nuts as with some volume this could result in some kind of prolapse!!! Someone should throw some money at these guys, seriously. If I had a label I'd be on the phone right now...hell, if I had the money I'd be starting a label just to get these guys heard!!!!

DEMOLAND: Stereoner - Silverback EP

Stereoner - Silverback

It was a freezing day in October 2008 when Basti, Ben and Julian met to jam out. They wanted to do some Hardcorepunk, but things didn't go well. There was neither flow nor feeling while playing. After a short break, some smokes and a few beers they cleared their minds and started to jam again without any stylistic boundaries... Suddenly some huge and powerful riffs cut the air and blew their minds!

That's when they realized that they were meant to play bad-ass Stoner Rock - and so they did...

While working on some material, it occurred to them that they need a second guitar. So Basti brought Flo on board and finally the rocket was ready to take off! They got overwhelmingly positive feedback, which was motivation enough for the guys to follow their path and rock on with their own interpretation of Stoner Rock.

Anger and serenity! These two emotions Stereoner unite within their music: THE Stoner Rockband from Wuppertal, Germany.Uncontrollable feelings like a Gorilla in the rain forest, screaming from his deepest throat full of rage and desperation about his haunts annihilation. Or shooting along the highway with hell for leather and still having two gears left while nodding one's head to the beat. In between unconditional fury and psychedelic floating, the Band moves as they and the crowd please.

With the 'Silverback EP', Stereoner presents their first record, forged self-made. With the addition of the necessary trash it sounds exactly as it should - and gives you a hint what energy this Band creates on stage.

REVIEW: Space Pilgrim - Space Pilgrim

PsychedelicRock from Germany
Space Pilgrim - Slumber Cave

Space Pilgrim are a three piece space doom jam band who hail from Germany, a place that is rapidly becoming the Mecca of quality acts to grace our music scene. This Demo is 5 tracks in length and clocks in at just over 63 minutes. Take the big bass tones of "Black Rebel Motorcycle Club"," Dead Meadow" and "Om", mix it with the light soulful jazzy chorus driven guitar licks of Co-Patriots" The Great Escape" and "Colour Haze" and presto you have one fine band by the name of Space Pilgrim.

So many bands nowadays are opting for long wide angle approach to music taking music to well over the 10 minute mark, which is fine but has to be backed up and kept interesting right the way through. Space Pilgrim manage to pretty much capture everything along the way and without a doubt do a fine job keeping the music interesting enough to want to not skip a track.

Second Sun is a stand out track 16:57 minutes! A massive 8 minute prelude of jazzy jammed out chilled ambience which paths the way to a slow gradual thick bass driven classic "stoner "riff! Effects, Delay & Mood all the trimmings orchestrated to pure perfection.

Space Pilgrim's songs are layered with loads of effects bouncing though Psychedelic holes in the sky. These three guys are an impressive unit who without a doubt mean business! For a demo of this quality I would expect a lot of labels to express interest and doubt these guys will be homeless without a deal for too long! This brand of music belongs to a high grade Label Small Stone or Elektrohasch Records please take note this is an epic demo which will appeal to so many people.

Space Pilgrim will soon have you on their pilgrimage if at first you don't convert play again it's a real grower with lots to offer suit up, relax and enjoy the flight to space....

Review: Tankdriver - Tankdriver Ep

HeavyRock from Germany
Tankdriver - The Future Bullet

Once again the German panzer divisions roll over Europe ready to complete their mission at any cost. This time you get a quite pleasant trip through the mine fields by a manic tank driver who is determined to blow all obstacles to pieces!

On the debut ep by the German Tankdriver you get a huge portion of unorthodox doom rock with quite catchy vocals. This ep is a good example of innovation in the genre and Tankdriver 'open doors' that (almost) never been opened before and I get the feeling that these three Germans have a lot of different influences in their arsenal.

The first track, 'The future bullet' is the second best song on this 4-tracker of doom and is undeniably a Pentagram fragrant mind blaster that flirts with everything from the heavy 70's. Fuzz laden guitars with melodic vocals and a great chorus which makes me wanna stomp down the church alley. The best gem, 'If anyone believes anything I won't believe a thing at all'. On Tankdriver's debut is a bluesy blend of doom rock and sometimes hard rockish riffs which reminds me of both Pentagram and Pagan Altar, and of course Black Sabbath. Both aurally and musically the band is similar to most of the heavier bands from the 70's and I am truly delighted by the skills of these German doom rockers. This gold nugget is an orgy of sabbathic riffs that literally beats the living shit out of any priest in sight.

Tankdriver ends this journey with Pentagram's 'Forever My Queen' which is one of my favourite songs by these legends. They do a great version of the song and it fits well into Tankdriver's repotoar and puts me in a very good mood. This is a good one and Tankdriver is an angelic upstart, but the ep is to short and I have preferred one or two songs more to be truly satisfied. Next time I hope they release an album so I can get a better overview of what's going inside this Tank. REVIEW: Samsara Blues Experiment - Demo

PsychedelicRock from Germany
Samsara Blues Experiment - Singata (Mystic Queen)

With the wreckage of planet Terraplane, captain Samsara is setting course towards planet Earth and a safe landing by means of a more psychedelic approach.

The closure of Terraplane was a fact, and in summer 2007 Peters (Vocals & Guitar) decided to form Samsara Blues Experiment (SBE). The band went through several changes during its first months, but the pieces were soon in place and in August 2008 SBE recorded their first demo.

The first act on this two track demo is Singata, a fairly relaxed creation with lots of psychedelic kindness mixed with a large portion of stoner rock. Besides the vocals and guitar Peters also done some nice sitar work on the track(s) and i get this spicy smell of India while it runs through my head, a hypnotic feeling that makes me high!
You get a huge dose of sound effects along with cool jams, a soft and clean bass sound, good drummings and... sorry...the vocals feels a bit weak but it kinda suits the music somehow. Apart from that this demo is more than ok.

The end track Double freedom is my favourite (as i'm a big fan of long songs) and has this go-with-the-flow feeling that smoothly touches every nerve in your body.
This song is mainly psyche-laden with soft riffings but after a few minutes Double freedom grows into a acid-dipped mushroom and Samsara blues experiment goes DOOOOOM!!! The last five minutes are heavy and run everything from head to toe.
Samsara blues experiment is similar to bands like Colour haze, Datura, Poseidotica and
Monster magnet (early work)... i can even hear some terraplane influences ;-)

SBE has been with the lot in short time, toured all over europe and played with bands like Farflung, Suma and Skywise. These germans also went on a short trip to the US (March 2009) and later this year SBE will release their debut.

REVIEW: Lost Youth - Medusas Jukebox

StonerRocK from Germany

Lost Youth are a band from Beckum, Germany. Formed in 2004 with a love for the almighty riff, they have unleashed their first album Medusas Jukebox upon the world. The riffs are fast and fuzzy, like some sort of sonic hybrid between Kyuss and Motorhead with some slower psychedelic interludes to keep things interesting. You can tell these guys took a lot of time honing their craft, paying attention to detail, with a clear vision of what they wanted to achieve with this recording. With so many bands flooding this genre lately this disc really stands ahead of the pack.

The tracks Mr. Melonious Felonious & Mrs. Melonious Felonious have guest vocals by a female (Hanna Hartleif), between her and Michael Hogrebe's dueling versus it comes across like a stoner version of Meatloaf's "Paradise by the Dashboard Light". This strikes me as being clever and unexpected. The track Astrovan is another highlight, again bringing the headpunch riffs, making me want to jump up and down in my tighty whities, with a midsection akin to stonervets, Colour Haze, then breaking it down again at the end. The song "Silence" is almost like a tribute to stoner gods Kyuss, with a riff taken right from their playbook. The albums closer "In the Saloon Soon" is a footstomper that makes you wanna knock out all your teeth and take a couple hits from grandpa's cough medicine.

At the end of the day this album is an enjoyable listen that shows a band ready to leave a dent on the stoner scene. I have just been informed that they will be heading back into the studio to record an as of yet untitled album for new label Boiling-Records. With a debut this strong I'm really looking forward to hearing what these guys lay down on plastic in the near future. Watch the skies!!

REVIEW: Bastardo - Skip the Present

StonerRocK from Germany

Wow! Once again the German tanks rolls over the world and this time they're loaded with belly punching fuzz bombs!

After just one demo in 2006 Bastardo from Marburg, Germany releases "Skip the Present", a man eating steel shark that cuts right thru you leaving nothing behind.

The album "Skip the Present" kicks off with gorgeous Belladonna, a perfect mix of Kyuss and Dozer which makes me wanna stage dive from my kitchen table and throw my television set out of the window. These Germans practice high quality stoner rock with lots of heaviness, lots of cool riffing, and on top of that a good singer.

Tracks like Saint, Scarscraper and Hell A, makes "Skip the Present" worth every penny. Melancholy fills my body while listen to New Day Dawning, Bastardo's instrumental contribution to the album, a beautiful piece that literally grabs me by the hands and leads me to the valley of sadness.

Bastardo may be a Kyuss clone but who cares, these ass kicking "Kaisers" of fuzz know how to do it the right way. The band has matured a lot since their first demo and with "Skip the Present" in mind they will reach the high mountains.
Hail to Germany!

Nine tracks and 41 minutes of fuzz rock indoctrination is what you get And I assure you, buying this album is not a failure.
