Hello Pacior and thank you for your time.
The new album is called "Sorry Eye", what's motivation behind that title?
Album is titled after one of the songs. It's not a common phrase, it's just a combination of words that somehow correspond to the lyrics in that tune - a piece about a despised guy, that everyone feels sorry for. We found it to be unusual enough for an album name.

You guys have a lot of different influences apparent in your music, what bands inspire you, old and new?
It's hard to pick just a few of them, really. Kyuss is an obvious choice, and all the stuff they did separately, after splitting up. Stoner/fuzz rock scene, bands like Fu Manchu, Dozer, Clutch and so on. Some late 80's/ early 90's alternative rock, like The Afghan Whigs, Helmet, Sonic Youth, Melvins, 16 Horsepower. Older bands like Budgie (amazing riffs and my personal favourite 70's band), Hawkwind.

I don't hear much music coming out of Poland, what bands have you shared the stage with or should we know about, is there a big scene there?
Well, Poland is mostly associated with heavier stuff, great "big" metal bands like Behemoth, Vader, Decapitated, there's also a very strong post rock/metal scene, but when it comes to stoner, fuzz or rock music in general, we're still pretty much in the underground. But for two or three years now the scene is growing rapidly. We all try to keep in touch, and that's also pretty cool. Some bands that are definetly worth mentioning: Blindead (more post rock and sludge oriented) Psychollywood, Octopussy (Dziablas's other band) Vagitarians, Satellite Beaver, Major Kong, Elvis Deluxe, Luna Negra...to name a few, and we've shared the stage with most of them.

Most embarrassing/worst gig?
Once we've waited too long for our turn to play, and our bass player drank about 6 or 7 beers (in Poland they're twice stronger than in the States) - he was having trouble keeping himself straight, and at one point dropped his bass on the floor. But it was all good, clean fun, and I can't say we were embarrassed back then.

Best gig?
Recently, release party for The Sorry Eye - we've headlined the show, a lot of people came and everyone had a blast. Basically, gigs close to our home town are mostly really great, we have our audience, that we can always count on, sometimes they sing the lyrics with us. It feels good.

The track "Pull in Like a Black Hole" off of the first EP is one of my favorite tunes. What was the inspiration behind that song/writing process, or the process you guys use for all of your song writing?

Thanks! When we wrote songs that ended up on the EP, we mostly worked on the riffs and vocals individually at home. Then we brushed it up in our rehearsal space, and arranged it together. When it comes to "Pull In...", I remember that Dziablas came up with the bass riff first, but we couldn't take it any further for a long time. One day I was just improvising stuff over that part, and accidently grabbed a slide. I recorded my part over the bass line, and it basically inspired Dziablas to write the chorus and verses for the song, in one evening.
We took a different approach with "The Sorry Eye", one night we just jammed a lot, and recorded everything, and then we took the best parts out of our jams and turned it into songs. 90% of the album was written together in our rehearsal space.

How long did it take to record "The Sorry Eye"?

Recording drums took about 2 days, guitars and bass about 5 days, same as vocals.

"The Sorry Eye" has a real epic feel to it, and the production is top notch. Where was it recorded, and what kind of equipment do you guys use?

Thanks again! We recorded, mixed and mastered it at Sounds Great Promotion studio in Gdynia. Dziablas works there as a recording engineer, and he did all the tracking for the album. We used a "vintage" approach to recording - most of the drum sound comes from just two microphones, we also used some really old mics for recording guitar and bass. We used Gibson Les Paul guitar through 1978 Marshall JMP and Orange Rocker amps, Fender Precision Bass and Premier drumset. Most of the work was done by our friend and owner of the studio, Kikut, who mixed and mastered the album. He used modern pre-amps and consoles, but for mixing he "compressed" all of the separate tracks into just four, and that really made a huge impact on the sound of the album.

A lot of bands from around the world sometimes sing in their mother tongue, is there a reason u choose to sing in English over your native tongue?
That's true - we obviously play for Polish audience, mostly, and sometimes we face the accusations of being "false", by not singing in our mother tongue. I don't agree with that at all. There are several reasons why we sing in English. First of all, we feel that it fits our music best. We treat rock music as a heritage of English and American culture, and English language is a part of that heritage, just like the electric guitar. Playing stoner rock with Polish lyrics would be just weird to us.
Dziablas is quite fluent in English, his foreign accent is not so distinctive, so we think it sounds natural and not forced. We've heard the opinions from native speakers, that he sounds like an American, so that's pretty cool. Hopefully, we can reach out to much bigger audience that way. Maybe someday we'll be in the same league as Dozer or Truckfighters - and I don't think they'd achieve what they did, if they had their lyrics in native Swedish.

If you had one wish what would it be?

To be filthy fucking rich...then we could rent a nightliner and tour Europe and the States, just for fun...

Where do you see yourself(s) in 5 years?
On a USA tour in a nightliner, hopefully. But more realistic, recording our fourth or fifth album, maybe with backup from a good label, and gigging - a lot.

Do you guys make enough to survive playing music, or do you have day jobs? If so, what are they?
Today, when music comes free with an Internet connection, it's really hard to do. Right now we do it only part-time, and we're happy when the band's profits can balance the expenses. We all have day jobs, Dziablas works as a recording engineer and graphic designer, Seba is a sales specialist, and I'm a civil engineer.

Favorite expression/swear words?
Polish is a really beautiful language when it comes to swearing, and a simple "kurwa"(whore) or "jebac"(fuck) can have a lot of different meanings, depending on the context. I don't think I could ever pick just a few of them

Previous bands, members have been in?
Mostly just loose, no-name projects - Broken Betty is our first more serious band.

If you could tour with any band in the world, which would it be?
Tough choice...I'd probably go for the Melvins or Helmet - we idolize them and yet they seem to be very cool and down to earth guys, so it might be fun.

REVIEW: SuperGiant - Pistol Star

I just received this little gem in the mail yesterday, and as I write this review, I'm playing it for the first time to get my immediate thoughts and reactions. For all of you newbie's out there SuperGiant has been laying down the rock for a few years now. With their debut EP back in 2006 and Antares in 2008 (both of which I hold in high regard), now the boys from New Mexico are back in 2011 with their 3rd installment in sonic ear cleansing with the aptly titled "Pistol Star".

The boys here haven't strayed much from the formula of their previous releases much, and why should they? If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? What you get here is ballsy rock 'n roll, southern fried riffs a plenty with enough testosterone to impregnate any female willing to give it a listen.

Some of the highlights that hit me right away are the tracks "Emotion" which comes out of the gate swinging, with a riff that reminds me a bit of Soundgarden's "Jesus Christ Pose" and has that same kind of intensity, incredibly cool stuff here. The AC/DC meets Led Zeppelin stomp of "Rosey Posey" and "Mexican Radio" which at first glance, I thought was going to be a cover of the old Wall of Voodoo song, but no, rather it's a barnstorming southern rocker with tons of attitude. Then we land on the final track, the title track, "Pistol Star", this song really shines, starts out spacey and chill, then crushes you with a wall of guitars, showing off Joel Rogers's haunting vocal ability at the same time. "Pistol Star" has it all, great musicians playing great music. Don't pass this one up.

REVIEW: Birch Hill Dam - Colossus

"Colossus" is the title given to Birch Hill Dam's sophomore release, after releasing their self-titled debut back in 2009; they are back and ready to prove themselves against metal's elite.

"Colossus" meaning, something of immense size or power, seems a pretty fitting description to the grooving onslaught put forth on this album. Staying true to their debut, what u get here is more of the same southern-tinged stoner metal, a little doom thrown in for good measure and heaping amount of 70's and 80's rock, akin with bands like Down, Crowbar, Alabama Thunderpussy with a bit of Thin Lizzy and Deep Purple. Like their debut they even throw in a cover on the disc, unlisted on my promo but a huge surprise to my ears. Giving the "Birch Hill" flavor to an old Twisted Sister song, and showing their roots a bit. I love it when bands do that to a familiar tune, and make it their own.

Most of the vocals are clean and harmonious, but every once in awhile letting out a throat-shredding scream isn't out of the question, done with taste, and perfect timing. The production on "Colossus" is a step forward from the debut as well; everything is well balanced and in your face just like any good metal album should be.

Solid from beginning to end, there isn't one negative thing I can say about "Colossus". If u like honest and sincere heavy rock with no bullshit and balls to spare, this could be one of your favorite albums of 2011, if you don't, then why are you reading this? A must have for mine, and anyone's music collection.

REVIEW: Svölk - Svölk

Let us consider large calibre for a while, because here is some damn heavy Norwegian timber that beats the drum...

What the hell does svölk means? Even if I'm Swedish (next to Norway) I don't understand a word of it. Anyway, these dudes rock the shit out of any living soul and make a few jumps on the Richter scale without any difficulties! These guys pop out from no(r)w(ay)here and have previously been completely unknown to me, they have simply past my super radar (thanks for the tip Adam!). Well, we all make "mistakes" sometimes;-)

On the self-titled debut album Svölk delivers nine jaw dropping power measurements whose arsenal includes both riff rock (most of it) and old school heavy metal in 42 glowing minutes. Svölk fires their first round '52' and the smell of burning rubber fills the air almost immediately, hold your wig granny and stop banging your walker against the wall, because there is a new bear in town! Imagine that Sunride and Sahg mates with Mannhai and Spiritual Beggars, the outcome would be a little svölkie. This is like 52 times the pain, but it's worth every god damn slap because when these gentlemen hold the stick nothing can go wrong!

The following tracks 'This is it' and Anchor' goes on in the same direction. In other word; you get loads of heaviness and plenty of classy riffs, and the vocals rule! The Norwegian rock armada hammers on with the fourth nugget 'Sweet agony' and once again you get invited to a deafening demonstration which is comparable to bands like Coogan's Bluff, Sasquatch, Gascoine and to some of the heavy southern rock scene. A neat concoction of thrilling riffs and the vocals impresses even here. Simply, Sweet agony is one of the absolute highlights on the album.

After having tasted 52 times the pain on the first gem '52' Svölk are ready to punch you a few times more. On the sixth song '12 times the pain', you get a more "ordinary" rock treatment with less stoner influences and bands like Lamont, Rockzilla and the Glasspack comes to mind. I might "be out hiking in the wrong weather" but that's my definition. Anyway, who cares as long as the amps are burning I am satisfied.

Svölk ends the show with 'Inferno' and 'Dead: 30' which are quite different from the others, here you get the heavy metal flavoured mixture I previously mentioned. These tracks make me think of The Sword and early Iron Maiden. Although I'm not usually into this kind of music the Norwegians still manage to keep my interest alive. The album contains almost no sleeping pills and is mostly a fresh and alert creation of higher rank. Svölk deserve a place among its predecessors Honcho, Pawnshop, El Caco, Sahg etc. and i hope that the journey doesn't end here, and we get the pleasure to hear more from these heavy rock dudes in future... thumbs up Svölk!

In a world dominated by corporate interests and processed popular culture it is hard to find the soul of rebellion in Rock n' Roll. There are battalions of metalheads and rockers throughout the country laying in wait, calm beneath the veneer, primed to explode. The fuse to ignite the devastation is Superchief's latest release. "Corporate Dynamite".

As the name suggests, the album is a call to arms to those that tire of the current state of "Rock n' Roll" in this great land. Like a powder keg Superchief is set to decimate the corporate music landscape with their uncompromising riffage and moxy. The music comes from the soul of the 5 piece from Des Moines, Iowa, and it is evident to the most seasoned advocate of the loud, to the armchair enthusiast. "Corporate Dynamite" is an album that all walks of life can sink their teeth into, and that was not planned in a board room, or in some marketing graduates cubicle... it just happened, like it is supposed to. Superchief wrote the songs they wanted to and recorded them, simple as that. Yet so far beyond simple that the complexity of the battle cry draws the listener in and whispers in their ear, "Go blow up some shit!"

Over the past 3 years Superchief has honed their skills and sharpened their senses. Playing hundreds of shows to crowds throughout the Midwest and growing their fanbase, the band takes the stage with a carefree demeanor, but with the determination of a pugilist. Superchief has built its reputation and foundation on a raucous and beer soaked live show. It is their ability to play their music live, with an evident enthusiasm that wins them new fans. Knowing how important raw live energy can be, Superchief made damn sure that is how their first full length album, "Corporate Dynamite" was captured.

In November of 2010, they entered Sound Farm recording studio to record "Corporate Dynamite". The guys went in, without a click track, without Auto Tune and with the intent that overproduction ruins the true character of a recording, and cranked out 10 songs in one weekend. Focused by determination and several hundred beers Superchief created an album that is infused with the elements of true rebellion and Rock n' Roll swagger. They wanted the little imperfections; the slight tempo variations that a live recording was missing in the majority of new recordings. With the help of engineer, Ryan Martin and of Terranova, they got exactly what they wanted.

The above was included with my copy of "Corporate Dynamite" which I received for review, I chose to include most of it here because I totally agree with what was said, and could not have said it any better myself. "Corporate Dynamite" is the equivalent to going 10 rounds with Tyson... lots of dancing around, double barreled head punches, and in the end, if it doesn't knock you out, it will definitely chew on your ear.

Psychedelic Stoner Rock from France

The French Mars Red Sky has managed to put out one of those WOW-albums that comes two or three times a year! A word that comes to mind is; melancholy, super psychedelic and VERY tasty. After releasing the debut ep 'Cursed' earlier this year Mars Red Sky serves this master blaster on a silver plate! You get seven beautifully carved heavy psyche/stoner gems in almost 40 minutes. This is no mediocrity, rather a first class acid trip through the red dunes of Mars. No slips are made and every tone is carefully sewn into this magic carpet that offers a breathtaking journey through time and space.

Mars Red Sky launches their first rocker towards the peak of the holy mountain, the full-featured 'Strong Reflections' is on the agenda and the sun shines stronger than ever! Imagine that Colour Haze, The Machine and Kyuss teams up and cooking up the century's most magical mushroom stew. You get heaps of atmospheric deep dives and stylish arrangements, and on top of that an impassioned voice that will make anyone to shed a tear. The second act 'Curse' rolls in the same direction, perhaps not as amazing as its predecessor, but is still better than some bands manage to accomplish.

On the third act 'Falls' Mars Red Sky delivers a beautifully intertwined instrumental, And the guys clearly show that practice makes perfect. Once again you get vibes of both Colour Haze and The machine, along with loads of the "Martian" sound. If I get to choose the 'Way to Rome' (fourth act), I would choose the route which the French are taking! This track is absolutely one of my favourites on the album. Way to Rome is a real happy event that touches all the good things in life, and contains everything a great stoner song should have!

The last two gems on the album 'Marble Sky' and 'Up The Stairs' is like being hurled into space. To float weightless around the universe without any worries. These mammoths forking their way through the soundscapes, while the guys in Mars Red Sky jumps in as no.2 on my top ten list of great albums this year! (so far).

REVIEW: Lunar Dust - Full Moon Blues

Lunar Dust is one of the most promising newcomers who may the desert sand to swirl around in the most constructive way. This power trio was formed in Milan, Italy 2009, after a decade of different music experiences for each of the three members. They developed their "own style"; a great combination of stoner/desert and 70's rock, paying attention to heavy melodic riffs and great vocals. One of the main influences must obviously be Kyuss and Dozer (as usual) because everything smells Cactus, and the dusty roads remain just as dusty as they should be! There are also heavy psyche/acid rock elements to the music.

In January 2011 Lunar Dust headed for the studio and recorded their debut album 'Full moon blues' which is a self produced session in eight promising acts. The band is still unsigned and looking for a record deal and distribution worldwide. So my advice to all earthbound labels is; what are you waiting for?!

This journey starts off with the nicely carved 'Firewall' which is as the title describes a wall of inflammable riffs that burns big holes in the most thick-shelled cactus. Both Kyuss, Samavayo and Brain Police comes to mind, and just like these genuine bands Lunar Dust delivers solid stoner magic. The second launch 'Silent deepness' is just as solid and touches both the stoner genre and the 70's. You get fat fuzzy riffs á la Grand Funk Railroad meets Dozer, downtuned and coarse-grained, and the dust is whirling as Lunar Dust rushes on. This is absolutely one of the outstanding tracks on 'Full moon blues'

Fear the cactus, or should i say 'Beware the cactus' (third track) is also quite an experience. This nugget is a sharp instrumental son of a bitch that runs you over like a raging desert cruiser in 300 miles an hour. 'Beware the cactus' is a good example of classy instrumental stoner rock that is highly recommended for those who are only in it for the instruments! On track number six 'Crimson eyes' the Italian stallions makes a slightly different set-accession and offers a more traditional mix of "regular" heavy rock, acid rock and QOTSA. With or without the typical desert riffs; this is still well worth the dig!

Lunar Dust ends 'Full moon blues' with the nicely arranged 'Stereotype' which is a perfect ending to this eight of eight album! This time the guys offer a more old school mixture and remind me of the early works of both Dozer, Honcho and Magnified Eye. Just as these dignities this trio manages to place the riffs in the right place and nothing feels dull or mediocre. 'Full moon blues' is bloody good start to this trip and the guys in Lunar Dust have certainly managed to capture my interest. This "beautiful" piece of work will with no doubt end up on my top 10 list of 2011best albums. I hope that the journey does not end here and we'll hear more from these dudes in future!

REVIEW: The Hollow Men - Food Chain

Something so similar surrounds this opening bass & drum beat, as the guitar floats in and the words are released it brings me back to the early days in the '90's. One of my favorite times in music. Euphoria starts the release off, and you would be hard pressed not to think it could be a long lost recording from the "grunge" days, like I've heard them before beside an Alice In Chains or a Helmet. Is this a good thing, you bet, two of the better bands from that period.

They pick it up more with Top of the Food Chain, with its smooth guitar-bass mixture, the vocalist pipes, on this song is great, a perfect match for the grind that the song builds through its, almost 6 mins. It's always nice to hear a heavy band with good clean vocals, with solid melodies. It just keeps getting better with Out in the Cold, another heavy grungy song, crunchy catchy cosmic bliss, this baby is one meant for the good old days when people would watch videos on TV to catch the next great up and coming band (no not the Justin Beiber kind either..). I'm not sure if this is The Hollow Men's goal, but I could certainly picture this song getting radio play.

Although Throne may be their "popiest" number, it's certainly not a pop song. With a touch of Screaming Trees (another top band I like), this song just rolls along at a certain slick pace, a groove that doesn't stop. It majestically had me hooked in, head bobbing, and knee bouncing. Another beauty by them. Soldier has a killer riff, it drags you in, and does not let go, and you can't help but feel like you want this song to go on & on. The drums compliment this song so well, allowing the bass & guitar to rip it up, yet keep it structured perfectly. I hear abit of Eddie Vedder in the singing, which compliments this song even more.

This Is Not A Love Song is a straight up balls to the wall rocker. Straight to your heart, it's 2 mins of pure punk power. We end it off with Bleed. Another poppier number, although it's far from being a pop song. I'm almost at a loss to describe it; it's got such a nice roll to it, rocking, yet mellow in its delivery. The singing once again is exceptional, although I'm not sure who is singing here (as both the guitarist & drummer are listed as vocalists).

All in all this is a great release. I was very much surprised how the production, the songs, the lyrics were all well thought out. I'm not sure how well they go over in the Netherlands, but these guys have a great future ahead of them. Although I know it's not every bands dream to get "huge" these guys certainly have the potential. They show no weakness in anything they do on this record. If you're a fan of Alice In Chains, Helmet, Screaming Trees etc... you would do no wrong getting this, and make no mistake, they certainly are not ripping these bands off; they are just building on what these bands left behind.

REVIEW: Tombstones - Volume II

The nightmare continues...
Hell yeah! The powerful and mighty Tombstones from Norway are ready to crush all walls on their debut album 'II'. Get ready for some real heavy shit!

No fuck'n around is exactly what you might call this disc, on the debut album 'II' Tombstones shows the Masses that the bells of doom are ringing and the Vikings no longer exist! Quite a lot has happened since the demo 'Volume 1' and the band is heavier and seems more confident in what they are doing. In other words; it goes in the right direction.

The new album starts off with 'Hellfire' which is loose cannon without inhibitions.'The fire' take to prisoners and smashes you to pieces, over five burning minutes of uncompromising Norwegian anger with patter drums and glow hot strings. This is a ginormous stir up among the tombstones and the trio literally drives the stake through your heart. The followers 'Distorted Visions' and 'Whisperer In Darkness' makes me shiver all over, slow and sinister with a thrilling sense of the dark. This is true doom of higher rank which is comparable to dignities such as The Gates Of Slumber, Las Cruces and Wall Of Sleep.

'Further Down The Abyss' is one of the slowest acts and along with 'Realms Of Oblivion' these two make the perfect match to this album and completes the whole in a cool and sinister way. An exercise in raw power and demonic behaviour which makes any priest drop dead. Other tracks worth mentioning are the monstrous seventh act 'The Source' and the following 'Wheels Turn' which certainly brings those hidden monsters in the closet back to life!

I consider Tombstone's 'II' as one of the ten best doom releases in 2010 and if you prefer quality instead of quantity you have to try this one. If you're into bands like Cathedral, The Gates Of Slumber, Wall Of Sleep, Saint Vitus and so on, then Tombstones is for you! Turn the cross and join the dark forces... Norway is on the march!

REVIEW: The Muggs - Born Ugly

It's 1972 and I've got my Plymouth Road Runner ready, she's packing a 440 CID engine with a 4-barrel carburetor under her hood, she's gassed up and ready to go. We've booked a special appointment with an old friend. Let her fuckin' rip, she burns her tires down the roadway, the streetlights are a blur to my eyes, everything I see just flashes by, asphalt tearing up behind me. Can't keep my old friend waiting. Turn right, I head south, way down Washington Blvd, where my old friend lives tonight... Look for number 1, Cobo Hall. Ladies & Gentleman, we are proud to present, in support of their new release, Born Ugly, The Muggs.........

Born Ugly begins, fuckin' groove slays, the crowd has already risen off their asses, already feeling electric, wired, if there was a perfect song to start an album off with then, this is it. We slide right into Blood Meridian, another guitar heavy groove, like Humble Pie of old, the Muggs, have the head nodding in all directions. I see the crowd move in unison, heads banging, smoke filled air, that sweet smell..... Numb the body has become, my ears slaves to the music filling up the hall, can I say it's knocking me out cold.

We hit Home Free, a more melodic song, all three instruments take you down this path to enlightment, slower, relaxes the mind...then it hits you with this sweet soaring guitar solo...that just brings me back in my seat, crowd air guitaring, hands contorted in odd movements.. Spastic motions...almost beautiful like, then it just falls into that trance that melodic sweet sense again. This show, so far, is above and beyond what we expected...the crowd just mesmerized. We feel like we are right up there with them, the band, the Muggs.

Clean Break Blues up next, slide guitar frantic, infectious, this romp is another burner, although this time they throw in some sweet melody interplays between the band. It's a slide workout which gives this song something of a twist over the first three...then right into Notes From The Underground, a real hard rock stomper, short yet sweet, the we segue into Dear Theo , with another beautiful slide workout. These trilogies of songs complement each other so well, you would could easily think of it as one long great song. It certainly kept the crowd outta their seats.

Losing End Blues is a simple melodic number, with yet another stunning guitar line. The melody on this number shines once again. Certainly the Muggs have this formula down pat. It adds a nice dimension to the songs. It certainly has the feeling of some of the great 70's bands; LEB would not look out of place as a song on any one of the "classic rock" bands we grew up listening to. 6 To Midnite is another rocker. Great interplay between the drums and the guitar, the jam in the middle is like foreplay, just before the action begins again, climax. You can see, feel the crowds adoration for the band tonight. The Muggs are putting on a display of retro rock, done the right way.

After a brief second to compose myself, we are introduced to Sturm Und Drang, which starts as a by the numbers rocker. Which isn't all bad, but up until this point the songs have been stronger, however the song quickly segues into Hats Of Mr. Beardsley, which has a riff to rock, its dark, and it gets the crowd up on their feet again, it's a killer, and the audience has bought in.

All eyes on the stage, an acoustic number sets off on song number 11. World Around is the most beautiful song on this album, in this show, to my ears. The musicians are top notch on this song, the background melodies are outstanding. This is a real keeper. After this short number, the Muggs get the crowd moving again, with another hard stomper, Kitchen Sink Blues. I can't but feel like I'm hearing some older Humble Pie influences (the Pie being one of the greatest boogie/rock bands around). Kitchen Sink Blues does not let up, the perfect follow up from World Around. Stamping my feet, the ground shakes, the all walls feel like they are ready to crumble.

We have now reached the end, you can feel the disappointment. Last Words ends the album off on a high note. Just a riveting song with a stupendous guitar workout. Hard to see how anyone will leave here disappointed. Sold out show, sold me out, solid solid stuff.

The Muggs (Born Ugly) is without a doubt one of the best retro hard rock releases I have heard in a very long time. If you like the first two releases by them (S/T & On With The Show), then you will not be disappointed at all. I found this to be there strongest album yet. It is a pleasure to the ears, to any fan of hard rock with a retro twist. If you like the Pie, James Gang etc... then you will absolutely need this for your collection.

My only question is, how is this band not signed to a record label? Especially when there is one in their hometown that the Muggs would easily fit on their roster. It's a shame, a band with talent like this, goes unnoticed and does not get the recognition they deserve. Do yourself and the band a favor and buy this release.

Easily in my top 5 releases of the year if not the top right now.

REVIEW: SpartaKiev - Demo 2011

Introducing SPARTAKIEV! A new four piece rock outfit from Holland and yet again not surprisingly so, yet another fine release from the Country that seems to keep breeding great and serious rock n roll outfits! I stumbled across this band whilst researching through the never ending gems over at Bandcamp.

Spartakiev whilst not playing anything new, surprise me with their incredibly glowing sounds that send me back to the late 90's to early 00's. Where Stoner rock was somewhat peaking and loads of great bands kept putting out amazing records! Spartakiev hail in this area think, the punk like vibes of Demoncleaner, The Rawness of early Dozer, Dern Rutlidge and the sometimes jazz, surf elements of Fatso Jetson and you have a pretty good feeling as to what you are getting yourself into.

This 6 track demo/ep depending on what intent it's for is a classy introduction record with enough swings to make you not get bored and enough grooves to keep you wanting more. Tracks like "One " Oozes that classic stoner feeling, we all came to dig and love with dozer like vocals and chunking bass lines and classic raw blues with enough bite to keep it on that nice heavy side yet not at all being too heavy. "Swing a Swung" heads down the muffled down tuned road and reminds me to some degree of the earlier desert sessions stuff that was done on, say volumes 1 & 2!

"Daemons", see's "Spartakiev" get down to business a truly kick ass song and a real eye opener to what this band is about! Vocals on this track are seriously nailed, the chorus is so catchy with spoken word like haunts and crushing punk styled riff layer behind it! Again nothing new, but the wheel sometimes doesn't need to be reinvented, to enjoy good old fashioned stoner rock and roll!

I can see "Spartakiev", getting a lot of attention as there Demo gets exposed! I urge you to pick this up and contact the band it's just one of those gems, which will really take you back to the good old days and give hope to the future. Classic Demo with just the right amount of everything to keep it from being to mundane, solid effort guys I look forward a long player hopefully in the not too distant future...

Tobbe - Hi guys! Can you introduce yourselves?
Sonia: Hi all! Well, what may I say? I play bass guitar since I was 12, at the beginning (in the 90s) I tried many genres, especially with post rock and progressive bands, and then, at the end of that decade, I started to improve my experimental side with electronic equipment (Roland JD800 and others). Year by year, I kept listening to German cosmic music as an inner soundtrack for my musical needs, until I reached a clear vision about what I wanted to do with my instrument and music in general. At that point, I founded Void Generator with Gianmarco.
GM: Yeah, many years ago Sonia was a keyboardist and a former member of the band. I am guitar teacher here in Italy but I do another 'official' job that I prefer not to mention here, too far from music! I am the guitarist and the vocals too are mine on the last record. Cristiano is the keyboardist and Marco the Drummer, they are far from home at the moment and I am answering in behalf of them as you can see...

Tobbe - When did you start off as a band, and have you had the same members since the start?
Sonia: As I've just told, I'm a founder of the group since 1996.
GM: There have been many drummers, 4 if I don't get wrong, Marco is the last one since we started many years ago. We even had some guys on bass, well; in short, I am the only one from the beginning.
Sonia: At the beginning, there was another keyboardist beside me, his name was Massimo...He played in the first two VG albums.

Tobbe - How many albums have been made so far?
GM: Some early compilation, our first eponymous ep (2004 - 4 tracks, almost unavailable), a full length named We Have Found the Space (2006) and our last Phantom Hell and Soar Angelic here reviewed. We are going to appear on an American compilation from 272 Records with our 'classic' Sidereal Connection and more things are to come for the new album.
Sonia: I played bass into VG track "God Of The Space" for the first compilation called "Fuori dal Centro" for Fluido Distribuzioni; it was in 1996, then I went away for 10 long years to follow my intellectual carrier and, at the end of this period, there has been our reunion as co-founders in the late 2006, when Gabriele, Maurizio and Massimo split off; the year after, we worked to the musical material that would have formed Phantom Hell And Soar Angelic. The CD, in which I play bass guitar, was published, at least, on May the 6th 2010. Now an EP called Collision is about to be published, with a lot of guest musicians in it...
GM: yez, Collision is just a new ep of 2 songs made with a live track and an old recording - something different from the Phantom. We felt something different and wanted to publish that as an independent release. I think we'll do more things this way in the future.

Tobbe - What equipment do you use?
GM: A plethora of vintage instruments, from Sunn O))) to Fender, Marshall, Hiwatt and a couple of beasts speakers named Dragoon. Many effects like space echo and old synths like MS-10, surely I am forgetting something. Ah, Gibson guitars, of course.
Sonia: I've been using for a long time a Warwick Corvette bass; now I'm playing a 1978 Fender Jazz Bass, with a Fulltone modified bass distortion pedal (USA imported), Ampeg and Sunn O))) amplifier. Cristiano plays Minimoog too.

Tobbe - Have you got good response of the new album?
GM: Many very good reviews all over the world, and a good response from the market, radio broadcasting here in Italy, USA and Russia too.
Sonia: Silence means wonder: our fans, during the listening of the album, must have pronounced lots of "...!!!"...

Tobbe - I'm curious about one thing. Why is the last track on "phantom hell" hidden/untitled?
GM: well, we discussed a lot if we could put it or not on the album so we settled down the question trying to create a sort of surprise; just think about the attack of the song: this is the main reason. We wanted to create an excess all over the Phantom, matey...The title is not so significant as the emotion, the feeling.
Sonia: the main declared reason was to destroy every kind of stereo hi fi because of the unexpected guitar/bass/drums explosion at the third minute...

Tobbe - Have you ever played outside of Italy
GM: Nope, we had more than a chance but it is difficult because of the low budget many have, and we are not so young anymore...

Tobbe - You are looking for gigs in Europe (or worldwide?) for the moment, any success?
Sonia: As Gianmarco told, we received many invitations, maybe in summer...

Tobbe - Are you happy with your record label?
Sonia: Of course: it's ours!!! We do what we want in it! We don't have to follow any command by anyone; we freely compose the music we play. There are lots of other musical productions in this project too, check it out at www.phonosphera.com...

Tobbe - Do you pay for the studio costs yourselves, or does your label pay for it?
GM: He He! Yes, we have many instruments and collaboration that allows us to drastically reduce costs.

Tobbe - What influences do you have, and what music did you grew up to?
GM: Ehm, all the seventies, hard rock, heavy metal, space, prog, electronic, stoner, avant...and so on.
Sonia: I grew up with Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Can, the polyphonic Mike Oldfield, Pink Floyd, Amon Duul, Genesis...Cosmic, krautrock, electronic, psychedelia and progressive over all. Nowadays, I exercise myself into a meta-analytic style of listening about contemporary classical: my favorite ones are Penderecki, Gorecki, Takemitsu, Part, Berio and, of course, Stockhausen.

Tobbe - Any hobbies (besides the music), families, jobs etc. ?
Sonia: I write about poetry, literature and philosophy, studies in which I spent the most of my life. My personal blog is http://criticaimpura.wordpress.com/ . If you want to keep in touch with me and get a look....In my life, I'm a teacher. I love wandering throughout artistic places such as museums and churches and I adore dogs.
GM: I am a pusher of...music, this is my hobby...

Tobbe - Is Italy a good country to live in musically or in general?
GM: Is still there something for which Italy is fine? let me see...food, sun, then sun, food...and so on. That's all, I think.
Sonia: for many reasons, musical, political, social, absolutely NO! My only consolations as an Italian are Caravaggio...And Carlo Emilio Gadda.

Tobbe - Any future plans?
Sonia: Steve Jobs docet: I want to stay hungry, stay foolish...And keep playing, writing, living the Beauty I see all around myself with all my heart.
GM: A new album and more live acts.

Tobbe - The floor is open, is there anything you would like to add?
Sonia: Another brick on the floor... (!?!)

The 12 tracks here enclose a comic book concept of pure invention, which will take you to a place forgotten by God, a place forgotten by all, to the city of Gorma (an acronym of the members of the band).

Gorma is a ghost town, strange and decadent, lost in the Mexican desert, a town reflecting destruction, greed, madness, cruelty, evil and envy, all the wickedness still present in today's world. The protagonist called "Desolated Man" (an old and dirty loner cowboy), reaches the city of Gorma, just by chance, riding his old horse Jekyll. Closer and closer to evil-land, the old cowboy is captured by a series of events that trap him inside Gorma for eternity. The significance of the city is nothing but the doorway to damnation. The Desolated Man will have to fight against the Gorma's evil, surrounded by blood and delirium, trying to earn eternal peace.

The Mexicans will take on stages with this story made up by a soundtrack inspired by the powerful and massive best pages of Queens of the Stone Age and Kyuss, using the experiences gathered in previous projects (Spingigonzales and Goro), not only playing, but telling a story like some twisted Rodriguez film. In October of 2010 they released G.O.R.M.A., their first self-produced album, distributed by Go Down Records.

Concept albums are nothing new, and if this seems like a lot to swallow, it is! However, there's some really interesting things going on with this band and this album, and it really does suck you in and take you on a journey. The eerie spoken word intros and creepy passages throughout the recording really enhance the listening experience. I am really glad this was brought to my attention; I really enjoyed the hell out of it. I'm guessing the readers here will too.

Get ready folks for the hypno-grooving "Beats of Olarizu", the new offering from Spanish riff merchants, Arenna. Psyched-out interludes, intertwined with apocalyptic doom riffs are what's in store aplenty here. Taking cues from Kyuss and Sabbath and all that cool underground music from the 70's that nobody knows about and weaving a tapestry of color and light, that is not to be missed.

Having released their first demo back in 2007, Arenna is ready to show that they are ready to take the world by storm with "Beats of Olarizu". With lyrical themes ranging from a Third World War (Morning Light), Religion (Fall of the Crosses) and Spirituality (The Strangest of Lives), these are some pretty heavy topics not usually heard from your average stoner rock band.

A couple of the standout tracks on "Beats of Olarizu" are the nearly 12 minute epic song entitled "Eclipse". From its "Space Cadet" intro, acoustic guitars and Hammond organ flourishes, it really takes you on a magic carpet ride from beginning to end. And the last track, the 20 minute "Metamorphosis in lc (0,9168 g/cm³)" with its floaty, echo-drenched vocals and hypnotizing drone riffs keeps you deserted on some far away planet. With no hope of returning, or even a desire to do so.

With the mastering done by "Engine-Ear" Billy Anderson, the production is crisp and clear as you would expect from the longtime producer/engineer. Arenna has spared no expense with "Beats of Oarizu" releasing the CD on a triptic digipack, and also on double 12" vinyl, the vinyl includes three bonus tracks, Pilgrimage and Yeahh Man! Which are taken from the aforementioned demo, remastered, with an unreleased track "Pain Eraser".

This is one hell of a debut album and one that should be on everyone's must buy list. Another best of: for 2011 for sure. And one you won't forget for years to come.

The BOOM of DOOM continues.
The birth rate of new disciples has rarely been so high, but where most bands try to sound exactly like Sabbath or St. Vitus, Netherlands Hooded Priest have combined a number of styles and influences into their own take on the doom genre.
You will of course still be able to hear some Iommi worship here and there, but that's kind of impossible to avoid, agreed? So instead of just copying the masters of old, this five-piece keep your attention alive with mixing traditional and epic doom with the harder aspects of the truly best NWOBHM.

Sounding like early era Candlemass in one moment, in the next they (sometimes rather unexpectedly) shift into a Diamond Head-ish full out gallop and back to occult doom. It's tight (what a rhythm section!!), it's mean and the variation on this album is fucking great. Especially the guitar work stands out and is high above average. The vocal work is excellent and just like the music itself varies a lot.

Singer Finlay sometimes sounds possessed and travels through desperation...anger...madness. I wish the producer would've lifted the vocals to be in front. In all, I think this band have a good chance of becoming synonymous with the expression ''True Metal''

Long gone are the times when superb, soulfull Southern Rock couldn't be found anywhere but in the southern states. Well that's changed, boys 'n gals! North Americas best Southern Rock posse hail from the north, Puyallup, Washington to be exact.

With a catching name like SweetKiss Momma, this five piece have released a modern rock classic. Where many contemporary Southern Rock bands tend to mix their music with other styles, like country & western or Pantera-clone metal, SweetKiss Momma really bring the rock. Enhanced by some of the best vocals I've heard within the genre, there's not one single weak song on fittingly named ''Revival Rock''.

Hell...this sounds like a best-of album and not as a debut. Twelve songs about all the classic themes, influenced by all the heroes that made this style of rock the ultimate feel-good-trip!

REVIEW: Planet Mastergod - Delightful Contempt

There seems to be no end to all things metal coming out of the Scandinavian Peninsula. Norway has a track record unmatched in the rest of the world when it comes to exploring the sick mind of man through all the different styles of metal.

On their second release, the guys in Planet Mastergod take a deep dive into human aggression of various kinds. What instantly catches my attention on ''Delightful Contempt'' is the guitar work. The riffing is superb, varied and perfectly downtuned. Actually, when it comes to the guitars, this album scores a jackpot. The songs are powerfully built around the riffage, with a (stoner) metal edge, sometimes post-metal sound.

What brings my overall opinion down a bit is the vocal harmonies. Don't get me wrong, this guy can really sing. But I'm having problems fusing the awesome aggressivity of the music with the superclean vocals. Some of you will surely think the vocals make a nice contrast to the ferocious riffing, but i'd love a voice that follows the aggression of the music. But hey, that's just my opinion! All-in-all, this album kicks major ass and I urge you to listen.

REVIEW: At Devil Dirt - Self Titled 2011

Let me start this review by saying WOW!!! From the first time I heard a brief sample from this new band from Chile, on their Myspace page, I couldn't believe my ears. I was blown away by this two-piece. Yes you read it right, TWO-PIECE!! One guitar and one drummer! And both of them sharing the vocal duties, some sung in Spanish and some in English, all of it very harmonious and just plain awesome.

With guitars tuned down to bowel-shaking depths, and enough fuzz to choke a grizzly, At Devil Dirt create a huge wall of sound that can best be described as Kyuss hits the Floor carrying a Torche. There is not one piece of filler on this album, with most of the tracks clocking in at less than three minutes in length, it appeals to most peoples' attention span these days, and leaves the listener craving more.

I make it my mission here to scout out the coolest music around the world, and I'll be damned if this isn't chock-full of some of the best things I like, all wrapped up in a pretty little bow. The buzz around camp is this is the album of year, and I'm not one to argue. Check it out for yourself and let your conscience be your guide.

REVIEW: Thalamus - Sign Here For Nothing

For the second time the Swedish Thalamus hits the surface, this time with a five tracker titled 'Sign Here for Nothing'. In 2006 Thalamus made a demo, and in 2007 the band released their highly recommended debut album 'Beneath the dying sun' which is hard to beat. Unfortunately that's what Thalamus doesn't manage to do on the new ep. But 'Sign here...' is still not bad in any way and delivers a good portion of nicely carved stoner/hard rock nuggets enough to satisfy the starving masses.

Thalamus starts off with 'Hope You Understand' which offers a quite thrilling 70's experience through time and space. Yes, I understand what this is all about and Thalamus is still making me happy with their Hammond flavoured Stoner Rock. Imagine that Blue Oyster Cult or some other 70's relic mated with Dozer or Kyuss and you're pretty close to how it sounds. The second track 'Breathe Easy' really makes me breathe easy without any difficulty, I smell greatness and self-confidence. Once again they offer you ear candy of high qualities, and not to forget the vocals which is superb!

All tracks are neatly assembled without the slightest sign of slips and even if not 'Sign Here...'is as strong as its predecessor Thalamus still shows clear signs of gigantism. Track no. three 'Black Day Sunday' runs you down like a raging bull on meth, it is fortunate that I'm writing this on a Saturday and not on a Sunday. Otherwise I would have been writing in the dark at this point. Anyway, Black Day Sunday is a loose cannon that churning out high-explosive riffs á la the seventies meets present time. This is one of the highlights for sure and it is also a proof that this ep is worthy the attention.

REVIEW: Burn - Rock Royale

C'mon C'mon...let's motherfucking rock!
The Swedish Burn has returned with yet another superdooper rock carousel titled 'Rock Royale' that is a cross between 70's rock, Nick Royale and Hank Von Helvete! On the new album Burn offers you 10 fragrant rock'n roll rockets that makes one think of both The Hellacopters and Turbonegro, but also on old fav's like Blue Oyster Cult, Grand Funk Railroad, Poobah and even to some of the punkrock scene in the late 70's.

'Rock Royale' is the second school of rock that Jack Black haven't discovered yet, sad for him because for what I've heard these upstarts are something extra on stage! Unfortunately I missed them when they visited the city where I live. Yes I know, I should be punished for that, and spanked with burning guitar strings:)

The opening track 'C'mon C'mon' takes you on a nostalgic trip through burning amps and heavy hangovers. This is one hundred percent rock'n roll without the fuzz and Burn shows no signs of wanting to join the radio geeks (hopefully). The guitar riffs are cool and the vocals are a sassy mixture of Lydon and "Royale" seasoned with wonderful bass lines. The second gem 'The Wrestler' is something Mickey Rourke should have listen to before he made that movie. A word that pops up is; cocky, neat and tasteful, and when this four piece rock armada plays my ears is dancing with joy.

'A Girl Like You' and 'Oh!' are Burn's punkrock contribution of the disc that recalls of The Ramones or perhaps Boomtown Rats (early works), especially a girl like you. Oh! has a more New York Dolls meets Thin Lizzy feeling which might not be that punkish after all:) Other gems worth mentioning are; 'My Band' and the end track 'South America' which is one of the highlights on the album. Except for that South America is Rock Royale's longest track; it is a beautifully composed piece that contains both glow and superb music-making.

Rock Royale is entirely a safe bet even though there are one or two less interesting tracks. Both the presence and the fun permeate almost everything on the album which makes the less attractive songs to drown in the enjoyment. If you like the bands I previously named you will probably also like Burn.

REVIEW: Mangrove - A Distant Dream Of Tomorrow

If you are looking for some god old stoner/hard rock worshipping you have chosen "the right swamp", because this is what the Swedish Mangrove is all about.

The second effort 'A Distant Dream Of Tomorrow' contains 10 juicy tunes to chew on, that touches all aspects from the sacred 70's mixed up with a heavier stoner sound. In other words; you should not miss this power trio if you are a pre-historic fuzz rocker thirsting for some classy entertainment!

Mangrove begins the journey with the stylish 'Black Sun', which in a matter of seconds explodes and turns into an accurate fuzz machine churning out a ferocious cavalcade of yummy riffs. There is enough fuzz for everyone, even to set any space cruisin' granny off course! On the title track 'A distant...' and gem no. three 'Never Again' you get the same uplifting treatment. Especially on Never again which is a full-fledged rock hammer that hammers deep holes in the crust which is "surprisingly" similar to Black Sabbath's Never say die-era.

On the fourth song 'I've been seen upon the sun' Mangrove offers a somewhat slower performance, and the Swedes take a more relaxed position. Bands like Captain beyond, Led zeppelin and perhaps Leaf hound comes to mind, the song itself doesn't impress much on me but should satisfy those who prefer calmer rhythms. On gold nuggets like 'Mean Woman Blues' and 'Odd John's Mindtrip' the "swamp things" is back on track and fires two well-placed jaw knocks and as usual with these gentlemen, it is both well played and nicely arranged. Other highlights to this album is the eighth gem 'Walk Over the Ocean' and 'Legend Roads' which is a nice finish to a A Distant Dream Of Tomorrow, further comments is redundant since the seventies makes itself felt even here.

'A Distant Dream Of Tomorrow' is in general a safe bet, even though it made a few slips here and there. The tracks are beautifully assembled, the vocals are excellent and the sound is perfect for this kind of music. If you get hopelessly in love when you hear Grand funk railroad, Captain beyond, Positiva (latest effort), Nebula, Forte, Dozer, and Kyuss you should get this disc at once!

Thumbs up for Sweden...again!

REVIEW: Groan - The Sleeping Wizard

Groan is a delicious stoner/doom outfit hailing from the UK. If you are hunting for the perfect cross between these styles, then Groan is for you! The debut album 'The Sleeping Wizard' is a steamroller-like doomsday machine that eats everything or anything in its way...this wizard has been awakened from his beauty sleep and has started his engine...so beware!

What I remember Groan released a demo one or two years back which was quite a pleasant acquaintance, but comparatively to "the wizard" the demo feels pretty anaemic and is at least five times weaker than the newcomer. This time "The wizard" have cooked up an almost impenetrable sludge of anxiety, malaise and hell that he have chosen to divide into seven pissed off parts. The heavily armed riffs literally cutting into one's mind and the singer sounds more desperate than ever, this makes me more than happy to open these seven "doors" of hell more than once.

The Sleeping Wizard starts with the words; over the hills they come marching...burning and raping with glee...history's written by winners...the losers just beg and they plea. The words marching and winners match well to what these guys are doing, the lyrics comes from the first act in order named 'Ride of the Antichrist' which is a worthy introduction to this hell trip towards the purgatory. Bands like Sleep, Wall of sleep, Spirit caravan, Electric wizard and Suma comes to mind and just like these dignities Groan delivers magic.

Groan groans on with the titbit 'Witchy Woman' which is a slut in a saints' clothing that whips the shit out of any perverted monk, and Groan is also whipping themselves into my heart as I howl of doomsday enthusiasm. The fuzz is just as thick as it should be and the painful melodies are shuffling out of the speakers. Imagine a smelly stain that will not wash away, or a Madonna statue that guffaws every time a priest says a prayer, so damn it is. Do you get it?

The third gem 'Psychedelic demons' along with one of my favourites 'Deadly Omens' blows the toupee of Jesus himself and may the holy cross to melt with envy. Once again Groan tops the list of the most unwanted in heaven and as we all know; that's a good sign of good music...or what do you think? Tons of virulent strains, which are interspersed with accurate drumming and on top of that a lament whose echo will be heard in a thousand years.

Groan ends the journey with the cosmic doom act 'Ancient Space (master of time)' that resembles a cross between Sleep and Suma. Unfortunately, this gem is to short (4 minutes) and you barely have time to do an inverted sign of the cross, or even lighten your bong before it ends. If I had been Groan, I would have added at least five minutes more to this excellent piece. Damn you Groan!

REVIEW: Esper Scout - Kids & Pets E.P 2011

Sounds of a fresh rocking Female vocalist ... it's got me hooked. It brings me back to those days of old, back in the early 90's when music got fresh again. The View Above certainly has a great sound, musically commercial, though not a bad thing at all, as more bands need to sound like this on the radio.

I catch myself head nodding. Not overly powerful, the songs are just so catchy. Wallet of Brass Coins, reminds me of those days I look so forward to, summer, flowers blooming, and the stars as crisp as can be at night, to stare at the moon, and whisper to its smile. The dual guitars give this song some force, almost like it wants to break thru with a quick thunderstorm, only to fall back in its beauty of the sun, of the soul, there's no denying this song carries some weight. This song could easily be their single; I see no reason why it has not been picked up in the UK.

Oh shit, here comes the fuzz. Infectious, slamming guitar intro. Up-tempo, Miner Revs is easily the heaviest song on the EP. Its very riff catchy. I feel myself lying down on a sea of grass, mesmerized by the ferocity of the song (think L7) but better. Just a terrific beat, never lets up, the groove remains steady throughout.

The last song, Ralphf is another action packed song, though not nearly as catch as the first three, it certainly still strikes at the right point, and carries some weight that gives it an aggressive edge. Once again the guitars play such a perfect role in the songs. The solos are played with perfection. No amateurs are these ladies.

Esper Scout is an all female Alt. group that would have not looked out of place in the early 90's. That is not to say they do not bring anything fresh to the table. I can tell you with all honesty that this is one of the first all female acts that I have thoroughly enjoyed. The singer at times is so soft & beautiful, and then at the flick of a switch, she's aggressive, yet maintains that beautiful voice. The music is outstanding, not groundbreaking, but really, what is. You'd be a fool not to catch these ladies live. I can only hope they can get a full length cd out, and expand on the promise they show here.

Having had an ear on this band since the self-titled MeteorCity release back in 2009, I was eager to hear the newest output from this three-piece from New Mexico, so when the album entitled "Attack of the Future" hit my desk here, needless to say, I was more than giddy.

This time (which seems to be the trend) The Leeches are opting to put out the album themselves instead of relying on a label to do so. They continue in the direction they were headed with the first effort. Taking classic 70's prog rock and twisting it up in an "alternagressive" chaotic ball of confusion. The main thing I hear from others that have heard this album is the word "weird". To me that's a compliment, in a world of cookie cutter bands around every corner. In this case, weird = good.

With songs that range from spacey instrumentals, "The Zarn" to the fuzzy prog-laced stoner of "The Worms". Even fast-paced punk excursions of "The Spider". Then down to the doom-drenched "When the Sky Falls". The metal stomp of "Night of the Llama". And what has to be my favorite track, the mellow groovy "The Murderous Sea" with its flourishes of keyboard, chugging riffs and clever songwriting. You can tell these cats love music and approach these songs with a tongue-in-cheek aesthetic. Humorous at times, angry at others, but always staying true to themselves and their vision.

The only negative criticism I can give here is the production, it's really muddy in some parts and it loses some clarity. Some of it seems to get lost in mix. In a way however, it could be part of the charm as well. "Attack of the Future" probably won't appeal to everyone, but to these ears it's something unique and special, and warrants repeat listens to appreciate the genius at work. For fans of Bigelf, Sonic Youth and something different.

An Evening of STONER SLUDGE DOOM @ Dirty Shirlows

Sydney's local music scene got you down? Sitting at home bemoaning the potential axing of yet another pub venue? Well we've got just the thing to jolt you out of your apathetic slumber!

As ever, Sydney's dark underground music scene beckons to those who simply cannot survive without live music. Come April 9th, we're aiming some of the country's loudest and most intense psychedelic, stoner and doom bands at yo head - and it all goes down at Dirty Shirlows; one of the more prominent semi-legal warehouse venues in the Marrickville area.

Canberraian trio Looking Glass hark straight back to the days of Jimi Hendrix and Black Sabbath - a time where substance-fuelled rock gods seemed to tower above the general populace, with a guitar-wielding ability (and an appetite for hallucinogens) that seemed to far surpass what was attainable for a mere mortal. This is classic, high-energy, high-volume stoner rock laced with psychedelic leads, thundering bass and effects-drenched acid vocals. Simply awe inspiring.

Then comes Space Bong - South Australia's downtuned denizens of drone and a band that has produced some of the loudest and most incredible live experiences I have been privy too. Their brand of droning, nihilistic sludge is trance-inducing. We can guarantee you will have heard nothing quite like it.

To round out the night we have psychedelic drone/fuzz outfit Adrift for Days, Brisbane stoner-rockers Shellfin and local stoner blues standouts Mother Mars.

Since this is a warehouse venue, the night will be BYOB, BYOJ and all ages. The sound system at Dirty Shirlows is certainly nothing to scoff at - so bring your earplugs, your squares and your brooding misanthropy down for an evening of vibration, fuzz and drone. Entry is $15 and the show will run from 8pm til late.

I guess I kind of missed the boat on this band from the UK, seems they are making quite a name for themselves all over the world wide web, and deservedly so. Their 2nd album entitled "Desert Storm" is a riff filled groove orgy of the highest caliber.

The album seems to be split into different musical directions, while still maintaining the "Desert Storm" underneath it all. The first couple tracks "Cosmic Drips" and Ol' Town have a soulful, southern, Clutch vibe to them. The middle portion of the album serves up a more doom-laden Down meets Crowbar gristle.

The title track "Forked Tongues" is a massive punch in the proverbial gut and really shows the metal side of Desert Storm, giving me goose pimples, like Pantera did back in the day. "The Void" shows off Matt Ryan's vocal prowess, sounding a wee-bit like Disturbed's front man David Draiman during the verses. "Connected" is a somber acoustic number that takes you away from the fury for a almost five minutes and is really quite beautiful in its delivery. Rounding out "Forked Tongues" is the track "Pocketwatch" the final track, which takes all these elements that are present before it and puts them all together on one final middle-finger salute.

What we have here is another great album from start to finish. That wears it heart on its sleeve and takes no prisoners. Call it stoner, call it southern, call it metal just don't call it late for dinner.

Leave it to a little band from Texas to name a record after a mythological Mexican monster. While the multilinguist in me wonders whether the Chupacabra is of the masculine or feminine gender, the heavy-riff enthusiast is really digging this five-track package, served with a hearty helping of downtuned doom.

“Bayou Juju” serves up some river-deep southern grooves, with a slight southern twang in the vocals, which seem a bit buried in the profound riffage. “Descent Into the Maelstorm”goes down like a knife into butter, its wah-fuzz attack assaulting the senses at a casual, deliberate pace. “Common Ground” lets off the clutch a bit, with a fuzzy southern blues that sounds like SRV after a coupla bong hits, and “Phantasmagoria” continues with the laid-back, heavy blues vibe.

The title track is a swirling 15-minute epic with some jazzy drumming and spaced-out guitars. It serves as a showcase for the heavy blues soloing heard throughout, while ending the album on a HIGH note.
For those who like their doom of the dirty, southern variety, this album's well worth a listen.

I gotta say, I'm a big fan of Suplecs' Man's Ruin debut, Wrestlin' With My Lady Friend, particularly the song “Dope Fu,” a catchy, memorable tune with a riff that's as etched in my brain as the chorus' lyrics. Hadn't really been following them since, though I picked up their last one, “Powtin' on the Outside Pawty on the Inside” not too long ago, and wasn't particularly impressed. Now that it's been 11 years since “Dope Fu,” I was curious to hear what the Suplecs would churn out.

Opening track “Stand Alone” is a straight-ahead metal number, followed by “Fema Man,” which actually reminds me of Biohazard in its rap-metal delivery. Not what I was expecting to this point, at all...

“Once Again” is a poppy, punky number with cleanly-delivered vocals singing “Whoa-oh,” a la Glenn Danzig and a slowed-down, countrified chorus. This is only getting weirder... Things get heavier later on in the song, but with a clean guitar tone devoid of stoner-rawk fuzz. “Tried to Build an Engine” sounds kinda like a cross between QOTSA and Collective Soul with just a touch of that desert rock swagger. Hey, that's a start, I guess...

“2 x 4” finally slows things down, an instrumental tune that goes from mellow to heavy psych grooves and back again. Things pick up speed just shy of the five-minute mark, as some vocals finally make an appearance. “In the Shadow” is the closest we come thus far to sludge, some downtuned riffs and screamed vocals, yet still maintaining that laid-back stoner vibe.

The album ends with “Stepped On,” which sounds like a sped-up Fu Manchu tune, “Coward,” a decent return to the “Dope Fu” sound I really dig, and “Switchblade,” another slow stomper. Man, this record's a real mixed bag, but at least it ends on a high note.

When you see a full-length release with only six songs on it, you know it's either gonna be an epic meditation on astral physics, a long, dreadfully boring slog—or simply shameless Sleep/YOB worship. In that regard, Wight Weedy Wight really leans toward the latter. While not as good as the originals, if your lazy, half-baked ass can't make it to Holy Mountain, Wight is a whole lot better than drinking New Coke.

In opening track “Cosmic Rhythm #1,” Wight wears both its influences on its sleeve in a five-minute, drugged out, space-jam instrumental. Then they get into the really long stuff. “All Beyond the Piend(!?) of Being” begins as a cosmic blues, before a signature Al Cisneros bass groove joins the fray amidst some trippy riffing. A few spaced-out solos—guitar and bass—complete with spaceship sounds later, and we have a nine-minute meditation on...what? I'm not quite sure.

“Let Me Know When You Found God” (Oh, the grammar!) is equally long and slow, but unfortunately, it's also more structured and less interesting, although there are some redeeming moments to be found within its 10-minute, 10 km/h journey. For one, it contains a true guitar solo without any backing instruments. You don't hear those every day...

Perhaps the piece de resistance is the 12-minute title track. Driven by a rock-solid bass groove and fueled by lotsa wah, tis a solid spacey instro tune—for a good eight and a half minutes, anyways. The vocals don't really add much to the proceedings, but without checking, I'm assuming their singer also plays the bass.

Singer kicks it into Steven Tyler mode on “Shaman Woman,” a rather pedestrian blues rocker that's hindered by the piercing vocals. Fortunately, it's over in less than four minutes. “Hammer Boogie” barely eclipses the four-minute mark, and has a bit more balls, not to mention a freakin' saxophone solo! Still, it seems strange that they wouldn't end with an epic number. Guess they were running outta time at the recording studio, or something.

I stumbled across Death Bed Confession while looking for something else on CDBABY and what caught my eye was the words under the album notes which read: “Five powerful music forces have come together to bring into the world some kick your ass punch you in the face American metal!”. Now normally I would laugh off such a statement, but then I clicked the little play icon on the second track “Preacher” and I have to admit, it did kick my ass a bit. So I contacted the band and they were cool enough to send me a CD.

Once the CD arrived I noticed right away it was a CD-R, which means that it’s probably only a digital release to the general public, which it seems, is the direction a lot of bands are taking these days. However, I think this should be stamped on vinyl to really get the old school vibe it deserves, listening to this album made me think back to when I was a kid playing my old Judas Priest and KISS albums. The dual guitar attack is heavy and thick and would make Dimebag proud, with plenty of guitar solos to chew on. Yeah! Guitar solos! Remember them? The vocals at times have cool harmonies going on reminiscent of Alice in Chains, other times; it’s a Hetfield kind of snarl.

There are really no two songs alike on this album. Some might say that Death Bed Confession doesn’t have direction or know where they are going. To me however, I say they know their metal and mix it up to keep shit interesting. There really is something for everyone on here. Whether your bag is 80’s metal, nu metal, grunge, thrash, power metal, stoner metal, you will find something to love on this album. Being raised on metal, I will always wear the metalhead badge with honor; I rarely hear new stuff from the genre that makes sense to me. I get Death Bed Confession, and I’m willing to bet will you too. Put an ear on it.

Albatross Overdrive is a heavy rock band formed in early 2005. Hail from the Huntington Beach, LA area. Have a 5 song EP under their belts "Songs for the Road" released in 2007. Now a few years later have full length self titled album out, and what an album it is!

Taking their influences which range from 70’s heavyweights like UFO, Mountain and Black Sabbath and putting those grooves in a blender with more contemporary bands like Clutch and Corrosion of Conformity. I also hear a bit of a southern twang ala Lynyrd_Skynyrd some grunginess of Soundgarden and even some funk creeps into the mix. But make no mistake about it; what we have here is just good honest booty shakin’ rock ‘n’ roll. Played with passion and love for music.

The soulful and powerful vocals of Dan Silva mix perfectly with the gritty riffs jammed into your ears by axe-man Andrew Luddy, all while Rodney Peralta (Drums) and Davey Obade (Bass Guitar) keep the backbone strong. A head-bobbing, white-knuckle, high-octane joy-ride is what’s in store here, and not to be left out of your music collection. After a night on the turps and a date with my PC, doing the usual Search for new bands, I stumbled across Canadian Quartet Chron Goblin. These guys play nothing new, but there heart is totally there and really addictive! I have spun this Ep maybe 8 times in the last 2 days and it keeps growing on me each time I hear it.

With each listen I keep thinking Nebula , Let it burn era styled rock mixed with good old fashioned punk rock rawness of the mighty Demoncleaner a hint of blues here and there, but for the majority of the Ep its punk fuzz rock which is music to my ears!

Chron Goblin 5 Track Debut oozes catchy numbers, big ballsy riffs, incredible vocals and a groove that can’t be denied by even the most perceptive listener. Tracks Like Awkward Endeavour and Flat-Footed Hypocrite are perfect examples of what Chron can deliver, Josh Sandulak the vocalist is crushing on all counts and really delivers that perfect vibe on every note he hits.

Loads of people could say imitators! But in an ever changing scene, I still find myself digging the true roots of where our genre First began. So many bands from the late 90’s and early 2000’s have stripped themselves of these roots and headed in areas which I just don’t understand, arena rock and over produced records ! Chron Goblin stays so true to the good day’s live sounding raw energy which is so sadly missed these days.

These cats are surely going to be someone to watch out for in the coming months, when they release their debut album in June. I hope you too enjoy Chron’s Debut Ep as much as I do! Fans of Fu Manchu, Nebula, Demoncleaner Greenhouse Effect and the Glasspack will surely relish the buzz that Chron offer...

REVIEW: The Grand Astoria - Omnipresence

Culling their sound from a vast variety of influences, The Grand Astoria presents Omnipresence, a mixture of dirty garage rock, stoner grooves, acid rock vibes and some sneering, leering punk rock vocals. Kinda like a kid in a candy store who wants a bit of everything, they throw all these sounds into a paper bag to produce a pretty decent nine-track effort.

“Doomsday Party” gets things off to a brisk start, a fuzzy, punky number that sounds kinda like The Hellacopters fronted by Johnny Rotten and ends with a bang—literally. “Hungry & Foolish” slows things down a tad, while adding some spaceship soloing and Hammond organ into the mix. “Mania Grandiosa” takes things down another notch into desert rock territory with plenty of echoplex on the vox before turning into an all-out psychedelic freakout.

After a mellow interlude in “Omniabsent,” they get right back into the rock with “Rat Race in Moscow.” This race is more of a marathon than a sprint with its rolling mid-paced grooves and super-distorted vocals, a heavily-overdriven radio-friendly rocker. “Something Wicked This Way Comes” is a strange prog rock opus that kinda detracts from the rest of the tunes, IMO, but still has its moments, some inspired soloing over a galloping NWOBHM bassline—though I could do without the movie sound effects.

A regal rockin' effort from a great new band, with a ton of varied tunes and omnipresent distortion, The Grand Astoria has won me over with their twisted take on heavy psychedelic music. Worth seeking this one out. Email the band to get yourself a copy here thegrandastoria@gmail.com

After several years out in space in search for inspiration Void Generator now returns to mother Earth with a new album named ‘Phantom Hell and Soar Angelic’.

Void Generator generates anything but bad mainstream music, and just as the title predicts; this is a phantom hell, but in a good way! These Italian space men have managed to put out one ep and an album called ‘We have found the space’ a few years back in time, in other words ’Phantom hell...’ is their third attempt to conquer the universe.

‘Phantom hell...’ is a space odyssey divided into four monstrous acts in over 70 mesmerizing minutes of heavy psyche and space rock with some stoner elements thrown in. Void Generator has really succeeded in capturing the beauty and the beast at the same time, and has crafted an almost impenetrable barrier of innovative riff magic.

If you’re into bands like Hawkwind, First Band From Outer Space, Magic Lantern and Litmus as well as heavier acts like Colour Haze, Insider and Datura, then ‘Phantom Hell and Soar Angelic’ will turn you into an astronaut in no time just begging to be deferred into thin air! I will listen to this phantom hell over and over again ‘till my ears fall off, and I suggest you do the same!

These gents are currently looking for venues all over Europe (or worldwide) please help them out, and they will turn your country into a cosmic inferno even if you’re not angelic!

I admit it, I’m a long gone fuzzoholic and the only cure right now is called HUMAN REGRESSION! As one of my friends (Yoda) said: this album is one of the best releases in 2010, I agree with that.

After four years of silence Stoned Machine have returned with a bang!

The new album ‘Human regression’ is at least three times better than the demo release in 2006, much stronger songs, and a heavier sound with lots of fuzzalicious moments.

And most of all; there is 101% Kyuss worshipping enough to be called one of the best cactus jumpers in 2010! It’s always nice when a band liberates in the “right” direction because that is exactly what the Italian Stoned machine has managed to do, without losing one iota of the desert scented riffs.

‘Human regression’ starts its journey with the gigantic ‘Intoxication’ which is closely followed by the even more gigantic ‘Back to live in me’. Both songs makes the desert sand to swirl between your toes, and you cannot be more content than this if you’re into stoner/fuzz/riff/desert rock, or what the hell you wanna call it. The fourth track ‘Bed of sin’ proves once again that these Italian riff champions have done their homework.

‘Bed of sin’ starts off with a typical stoner riff á la Kyuss, followed by a ton of hard-boiled master riffs, in other words; there are plenty of fuzz involved! This gem ends with something that nonetheless makes me think of the intro to War pig (Black Sabbath)!

When I thought the strongest projectiles were fired, Stoned machine hits again!

This time you have to shut up and listen, because the sixth gold nugget ‘Shut up’ is worth every god damn second of your time. Shut up offers you the best in fuzz rock, further description is unnecessary because the dusty road is lined with fragrant cactus flowers here too, and the only word that comes to mind is K... Other goodies to mention is ‘Fire in my hands’ and the title track ‘Human regression’ which also makes it tickles a little extra in the guts. Here you get it all served in just one dish! (Just like everything else on Human regression)

Stoned machine is certainly one of the stoner genre’s wet dreams, which hopefully will spit out many goodies in the future, given to what they have accomplished on ‘Human regression’ it will probably not be any major problems with that. As I said before; this is one of the last year’s best fuzz albums, do yourself a favour... buy... or die!

This machine is not just stoned, but damn hungry too!!!

When this first appeared, I didn’t know what the hell it was. I hadn’t heard one word about it. I was told that it pulled more weight than a charging rhino and that it could be the next “big thing”. So needless to say I was more then interested. Once I heard the first few seconds of it, I could tell it was something special.

Right away I recognized the sound, and then I heard the front man’s voice… paused a second… and said to myself SUPAFUZZ!! The man behind the microphone is Dave Angstrom! I’ve enjoyed those Supafuzz albums for years. Also his work with Hermano, really everything he’s been a part of is pure gold. With Asylum on the Hill he’s teamed up with other fellow Kentuckians, Jason Groves (Supafuzz/Rosie Rose), JD Garner (The Dead Hours/Lennon), and Phil Kring (Rosie Rose/Blue Honey).

This is one of those albums that gives me that little chill, you know, that feeling that starts at the bottom of your spine, then shoots up to the bottom of your skull when something kicks copious amounts of ass. Well that little “spine monster” was crawling all over my back during Passage to the Puzzle Factory. This is some serious rock music here folks, without taking itself too seriously. You can tell these guys love what they do, and are having a blast doing it.

Most of the tracks are fuzzy past-paced rockers; however like any great album it lets up for a few minutes to let you breathe. The song “Stones Will Wash Away” is no exception to the rule, showing Asylum on the Hill can do more than ram a bunch of riffs down your throat, it’s a… (Dare I say it)… love ballad! Fear not because once it’s over it’s off to the races with “Seasons of Hurt” a killer track. If I had to choose a favorite that would be it. The record closes with a haunting untitled “ghost track” that really spoke to me on a personal level because of the things going on in my life lately.

In a perfect world, this would be the kind of stuff on the radio instead of all the rehashed bullshit that litters the airwaves. This debut has something for everyone. Do yourself a favor and pick up this disc; you’ll be glad you did. Passage to the Puzzle Factory will go down as one of the best releases of 2010 and beyond and is an instant classic.

REVIEW: Gniyrg Gnaarg – From Mother Sun Demo

Gniyrg Gnaarg—try saying that four times fast! Alas, this doomy album contains four tracks that move rather slowly, each hovering around the 10-minute mark. Vocals are delivered in a thick, droning Eastern European accent which adds an otherworldly quality to the music, though they seem to be a little too high in the mix at times, coming in too loud over the riffage in these ears, particularly on the first song.

Opening track “Awaiting the Sunlight” sounds part Kyuss, part Sleep and part Scandinavian sea shanty. The vocals add a pirate-like effect, but I could really do with less “oohs” and “yeahs.” “Enter the Dungeon” has their singer simultaneously channeling Al Cisneros and Tim Baker (of Cirith Ungol fame) on a slow, plodding doom number that's pretty decent.

“Earth Fire” is another slow-moving creature with a chorus that brings guttural death metal vocals into the mix and a guitar tone that makes the dentist's drill of Boston's Tom Scholz sound pleasant by comparison—to say nothing of the kindergarten lyrics that fit the Cookie Monster vocals to a T. “Big Bang” ends the album with a fizzle, a mish-mash of Sleep, The Obsessed and (insert influential doom band here). The vocals channel Cisneros' meditative OM delivery at times--which works quite well--but the music is pretty bland, aside from one recurring Winoesque riff that's not too bad.

Now, Gniyrg Gnaarg hails from Finland, home of legendary true doomsters Reverend Bizarre. However, this record resembles the Bizarre Reverend about as much as The Blues Brothers playing “Gimme Some Lovin'” sounds like a Hank Williams tune. Maybe Gniyrg Gnaarg's frontman should see if Albert Witchfinder gives singing lessons, that would be a start.

A two-track vinyl 12' of two-ton sludge, Double Space doubles down with some heavy downtuned riffage.

A Side “The Rock” has shades of YOB with a slightly more aggressive vocal sound, a lengthy, winding epic that lays the smackdown with its pounding rhythms. Add some slow breakdowns and progressive NeurIsis leanings for good measure, and you've got a solid track.

B Side “Bent” is slower from the get-go, laying on the down-tempo like Harvey Milk with some funkier drumming for the first couple minutes, then picking things up with a jagged riff that cuts deep before descending into darkness once again.
Man, this is some really good stuff..

Wiht are pleased to announce their signing to Doomanoid Records and the impending release of their next LP ‘The Harrowing of the North’.

Wiht are a Leeds-based trio who started out in March 2009 and whose epic, instrumental style straddles doom, stoner and psyche. Their self-titled debut EP, Wiht (November 2009), won them critical acclaim, described as ‘moving’ and ‘massive- 9/10’ (Planetfuzz.com), and ‘other worldly’, ‘set apart from other bands- 9/10’ (Ukmetalunderground.com). The band have played across the UK, supporting Brant Bjork and the Bros, Humanfly, Khuda and A Forest of Stars, and made it through to the final of the Battle For Damnation Festival in 2010.

Wiht’s first full album The Harrowing of The North is a two song, forty minute concept piece, set for a springtime release through Doomanoid Records. Taking influence thematically from the subjugation of the North of England by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, it tells the troubled history of doomsday-era Yorkshire- the king massacred it’s people and destroyed the land to ensure it held no economic or cultural worth and would remain under his subservient rule.

Recording begins early February at Ghosttown recordings in Leeds.

REVIEW: Domo (Promo)

Bong's up folks because there is a party going on in the psychedelic wonderland!

At first I thought; this is just another South American "low budget" band who is trying to hit the ceiling. About two minutes later I discovered that I was wrong! Domo isn't just another mediocre band but a real pleasure and if you are looking for a good "soundtrack" to your bong this is it!

Domo's debut demo (promo) contains seven heavy super psychedelic and experimental rock acts, and you get over an hour of sweetness and trippy soundscapes. There haven't been much good music from this part of the world lately and bands like Los Natas and Buffalo seems to have vanished from the face of the earth, well Natas is still putting out a tune or two that is worthy the ears, that's about it. Domo have broken the silence and proves that there is a new sheriff in town, so move over you fossils.

Even though all the songs are almost completely instrumental you never get tired of it and the gorgeous riffs literally come out of the speakers as a free-flowing acid syrup. Just the smell of it makes you high and as I said before; this slays! Domo is not preaching the usual stoner rock, as Kyuss and Fu Manchu etc, but these gentlemen offer a more acid-drenched dessert and are experimenting with jazz, blues and psyche. But calm folks, there are also some heavy fuzz immersed in the batter, enough to make even the heaviest guys to jump high... just press play and enjoy the ride!

Domo opens with 'Nadi' and almost immediately I get pleasing shivers and my ears buckling of delight. Bands like Colour Haze and The Machine comes to mind, and just like these dignities Domo knows how to enchant one's mind without leaving the smallest nerve unmoved. There are mountains of atmospheric deep dives, and the effect pedals have to work hard to please these brainiacs who only demand the best. The second act 'Prana' is a more stoner oriented mixture of psyche and acid rock with some vocals thrown in (a few words) that almost spans a 12-minute line. Once again you get a professional treatment of first-class riffs that makes every minute enjoyable. Other tracks worth mentioning are the ear pounding 'Asura', the relaxing ''Yamantaka' and the last trip, 'Samsara'. All three tracks are running in the same superior style without losing spark, although here you're greeted by intricate and beautifully composed riffs á la heavy psyche de luxe.

My advice to you is; GRAB IT!

REVIEW: Alunah - Call Of Avernus

For the British quartet Alunah (formerly sans h), their full-length debut represents a huge step forward from their previous Fall to Earth EP. The band has honed in on a focused, driven, fuzzy stoner/sludge sound, while frontwoman Sophie has really come into her own as a vocalist.

The most obvious comparison is Acid King, if not just for the “female-fronted stoner-band” factor, but the fact that they sound an awful lot like Acid King at times. Not a bad band to imitate, in my books.

Opening track “Living Fast in an Ancient Land” has single potential, a catchy blend of early Electric Wizard and Acid King worship, though at 6:44, it's a tad too long for radio... “Eternal Sea,” arguably the slowest number, features some crushing sludge riffs amidst tribal drumming patterns. “Circle of Stone” starts off mellow for a couple minutes, before their signature fuzz-wah combo kicks in for a rollicking solo.

“Higher” is a tune that'll getcha there, with its droning OTIS intro giving way to something slightly faster and fuzzier. “Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn” ends the album on a high note, a gritty, sludgy number that wouldn't sound too outta place amongst some of the slower stuff on the new High On Fire—aside from the female vocals, that is. I dig the Cisneros-style bass solo/cowbell interplay around the three-minute mark that serves as a stepping stone for the titular chorus.

With nine tracks stretching nearly 50 minutes in length, and all but a couple surpassing the five-minute mark, the album does tend to drag on at times, but there's enough diversity and vitality here to make Call of Avernus an interesting listen.

REVIEW: Herba Mate - The Jellyfish Is Dead And The Hurricane Is Coming

I don't speak enough Italian to understand what's going on in opening track “Machumba,” but once the rock gets going on Track 2, it trickles in at a leisurely pace, going nowhere fast while taking time out to solo. In fact, the vocals don't kick in until the third song, “Aragosta vs. Panther.” Their singer's got a gritty, southern rock growl, not really what I'd expected, but still suitable for the band's laid-back stoner style. (Lyrics are in English, BTW.)

Mind you, there aren't too many vocal passages on this album, which relies heavily on fuzzed-out instro jamming that falls somewhere between Kyuss, OTIS and Earthless. “Bugs” is a change of pace from the rest of the album, some offbeat percussion and guitar noises leading into a noodly progressive metal-type riff punctuated with some “Aaaahs.”

Perhaps the best moments on said album are a pair of untitled instro jams. Herba Mate is a band at it's best when they just shut up and play. That being said, album-ender “Sputnik” tends to drag on in its classical-guitar-and-waterfalls namby-pamby shit. Let me qualify that statement by saying Herba Mate is at its best when they shut up and play heavy rock.

Thanks to Nik from Seattlerockguy.com for giving us a heads up about these Super Sonic Stoner Wizards out of Seattle, Washington .Just when you thought there weren't any solid stoner rock bands in town the Ancient Warlocks showed up at the end of 2010 wielding their magic wand. Their demo certainly channels the usual suspects in Sabbath, Fu Manchu, not to mention The Obsessed, but who cares. Don't all stoner rock bands sound like Sabbath? Yes! The Ancient Warlocks are heavy as hell, groovy as fuck, and anyone who sings songs about super wizards from outer space deserve a Rainier tall can salute in my book. The preachers of the holy riff have struck again and the Belgian bull is back!

This time Ramon Zarate is riding on his back pointing yet another nine sharpened knives at you...duck or you will be cut in half!

The new album ‘Oyster’ by Ramon Zarate hailing from Liége in Belgium offers you a swarm of non bull-shitting fist that grabs you by your genitals and squeezes till your eyes pop out! The new effort picks up where the last left off, and the Belgians continue their fight without inhibitions. If you are looking for some dynamite you have come to the right joint, because TNT is exactly what Ramon Zarate is about.

‘Oyster’ begins with the somewhat crazy ‘Monkey’ that leaves no senses untouched, and before you know it the roller coaster ride is rolling. A deadly swarm of heavy fuzz guitars tickles my ears and every beat gets the desert sand to swirl. I’m in heaven; it just can’t get much better than this! Riff by riff, and beat by beat Ramon Z. cuts “himself” towards the podium, and nothing can stop it from happen. This fuzzadelic “ape” is bigger than King Kong and won’t stop until you bleeeeeeed! Ramon Zarate rumbles on with ‘Burning Bob’ and once again these animals rip the ears of your skull, this time you get megatons of super heavy monster riffs sharp as shark teeth and on top of that a Spaniard who makes the earth shake. This gem is reminiscent of a thoroughbred mix of Kyuss and Motorhead.

The title track is a dusty ride on the holy Kyuss trails that leads to timelessness.

There is nothing much more to say than that the engine is running hot even here and you are treated to a delicious menu of fuzz magic. Worth mentioning is also the two giants, ‘Losing Grace’ and ‘Shiteaters’ which together offer a steel barrier of solid rock. On these tracks Ramon Zarate gives you miles of enchantment together with a huge bucket of heavy fuzz rock. Words like grandeur and masterful fits in even here.

Is this how accurate you get from eating shit I will join the shiteater’s club right away!

The whole album is like having a stake driven right through your ears and there are no bad things to say about Oyster except for; when will you guys put out your next album? ;-) Ramon Zarate is one of the wet dreams in the stoner genre that hopefully will entertain us for many years to come. Senor Zarate, I salute you!

REVIEW: Blue Aside - The Orange Tree

Although Palace in Thunderland weren't household names outside of the Boston area during their seven-year run, their demise has produced a couple of trios that are breathing fresh air into a stagnant stoner doom scene. One of these bands is a group you mighta heard of by the name of Black Pyramid. The other is Blue Aside who, judging by the strength of the material on this five-song EP, will soon carve out their own niche with their heavy space rock vibes.

Opening track “The Traveller of Time and Space” sucks you in with swirling guitars over a heavy bottom end. The vocals, which take two minutes to arrive, go from low and guttural at the start to high-pitched and robotic, with a spacey sludge chorus and a winding keyboard outtro.

“Otis' Sun” is a tribute to my favourite local band, at least in name, although you get the feeling that these guys smoke up to Hawkwind more often than Hendrix. Following track “Orange Eyes” is much more OTIS-like, a slow, driving sludge riff blazing the way, albeit with some out-of-this-planet guitar interludes, Adam Abrams achieving a cosmic guitar tone to match his astronautic vocal stylings. This is space rock for the 21st century.

“Black Rays” is the slowest song of the five, a pounding, pummelling slice of cosmic doom with some serious psychedelic breakdowns and its fair share of Pentagram worship. “The Inevitable Journey” brings the EP to its inevitable conclusion, in grandiose YOB fashion.

Where as other sludge bands who deal in cosmic themes, like Zoroaster and The Atlas Moth, use harsh black-metal vocals to get their message across, Abrams' warm, clean tones give Blue Aside a big boost. Their deftly executed blending of sludgy doom grooves with spacy guitar (and occasional synth) passages provides the missing link between Sleep and Hawkwind, YOB and Captain Beyond, Sons of OTIS and Secret Saucer... You get the idea. As an initial artistic statement, The Orange Tree succeeds immensely. (I was gonna say “goes where no band has gone before” but that's just lame. Feel free to add your own “To infinity and beyond” “One small step for a band” cliches if you must...)

Once again the almighty riff-magician has swung his wand, this time Dusteroid have the chance to show their strength...finally the English riff machine is back with a BANG!

On the latest release ‘Tyrannosonor’ Dusteroid cooks you a dynamite soup made of diesel, solid rock, shrapnel, acid and gun powder. Spiced with a whole bucket of riff magic enough to get your brain to melt. If you compare the debut album ‘Albedo Zero’ with ‘Tyrannosonor’ I consider that a big improvement has been made in both songwriting and performance! This time the dusteroids seems more confident in what they produce and the songs are more “hit-oriented”, and have enough punch to overturn a whole building!

Immediately when Dusteroid starts to spin you can hear that something big is happening.

The heavily-armed ‘Defy’ oozes of dynamic moster riffs and has everything a perfect heavy rock tune should have. ‘Defy’ is a psychedelic whirlwind that blows away everything without leaving anything to chance. Dusteroid crashing on to the next act, ‘Highroller’ that kicks as hard as its predecessor, perhaps not as addictive but faaaar from bad. As I mentioned earlier, there has been a lot of improvement on the musical level, from being a mediocrity these fuzznauts has grown much stronger as a band, and seems to be more tuned than ever. Take a big dose of Kyuss, mix it up with an ever larger dose of Dozer, On A Pale Horse and Mannhai, and you get Dusteroid.

Further tracks to be mentioning is the powerful ‘Tomahawk Storm Trooper’ and ‘Whiskey Overdose’ and not to forget the last track ‘Dusty Road’ All three are riff canons of higher rank, an orgy in heavy stoner mixed with bluesy jam parts á la fuzz de luxe.

I hate to say this but I would have added at least two songs more because the album feels a bit to short (you still get 53 mins.), I just can’t get enough of it, I need moooooore to satisfy my hunger! Short or not, this heavy riff machinery don’t fuck around and know their instruments too well and are one of the few English stoner bands that produces records. Dusteroid will probably defend the UK stoner rock throne for a long time to come ....think big, think bigger, think DUSTEROID!
